This weekend in a small town called Swiebodzin, which is off the beaten track near the German border, in Poland. The head, of a really tall statue of Jesus, was added to the top of a monument completing the now World’s Tallest Statue of Jesus.
Many are familiar with Christ The Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil which stands at 39.6 meters (130 feet), and the Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, which rises to 40.44 meters (almost 133 feet). Well this is taller than both of those standing at 16-meter (52.5 feet) mound and a two-meter (6.6 feet) crown, exceeds 51 meters (167 feet). Its total weight is about 440 metric tons
Is this what Christ meant by “If I be lifted up”? I’m not really sure I see what erecting a statue this large has to do with Christ or his work. Apparently I am not the only one as this statue has caused a split in Poland as well. Many saying that the statue will draw many pilgrims/people (and their money) to Poland. Others saying the church suffered from megalomania (A paranoid delusion of grandeur in which an individual believes that he or she is an important person or is carrying out great plans.) and for them to put up such a statue and has nothing to do with serving Christ. All money for the project was raised through private donations.
So what do you think? Is there anyone who can tell me if Christ ever went through the land now known as Poland? Anyone going to see this? Is this borderline idolatry?
