What Are The Qualifications of an Apostle?

Clement 95 A.D. – “The apostles had perfect knowledge of church affairs and wrote under inspiration of the Spirit”

Ignatius of Antioch  107-117 A.D.  – “I do not issue commands as Peter and Paul because they were apostles and I am not”

Polycarp 118-155 A.D.  – “The apostles had the same authority as the prophets ” “He did not have the wisdom that Paul had because Paul was an apostle”

The Muratorian Canon 170 A. D. – They accepted no new writings to add to the gospel after the Apostles

10 Qualifications of an Apostle According to the Bible

1. Jesus selected the apostles. Luke 6:12-13

2. Jesus promised the apostles would sit on 12 thrones. Matthew 19:28

3. Jesus gave the apostles special miraculous powers. 2 Corinthians 12:12

4. The apostles were to be obeyed just like the old testament prophets. 2 Peter 3:1-2

5. The apostles were witnesses of the resurrected Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15

6. The apostles had authority over the churches. 1 Thessalonians 5:27

7. They gave the church its foundational doctrine. The Apostles Doctrine. Acts 2:42

8. The apostles had a foundational ministry. Ephesians 2:19-20

9. Paul as an apostle spent special time with Jesus. Galatians 1:11-17

10. The apostles appointed Elders and Deacons not other apostles. Acts 14:23
